Imagine your 11-year-old daughter coming home from school shaking. Because today in social studies, her teacher showed the class’s “strong leaders” poster. On it was George Washington. Rosa Parks. Nelson Mandela. And Adolf Hitler. “This picture…depicting the attributes of a ‘strong historical leader’ featured the unmistakable face of Adolf Hitler.” (p.2) Her teacher smiled and said, “Great job, class.” She felt like she was going to vomit. She looked at her teacher for help. Her teacher looked away. Like she was nothing. Then the kids started calling her “baby killer.” “Classmates…called Jews ‘baby killers,’ and said they deserve to die because of what is happening in Gaza.” (p.6) They slapped pro-Palestine stickers on their laptops and lockers. They pointed at her and spat, “You’re Israeli. Everyone hates Jews.” (p.6) One boy laughed and said they were glad her uncle died in the Hamas attacks – even though her uncle died of cancer years earlier. (p.6) She never told her parents. She thought if she stayed quiet, maybe they would like her. Every night she cried silently into her pillow. Until another kid told his mom about what they were doing to her. That’s how her dad found out. When he asked her, she sobbed so hard she couldn’t breathe. (p.5-6) Her parents begged Headmaster Kenneth R. Nysmith to help her. He promised he would fix it. (p.7) But instead… ➤ He cancelled the annual Holocaust speaker, claiming it might “inflame emotions” during the Israel-Gaza conflict. (p.7) ➤ Then he raised a giant Palestinian flag in the gym. (p.11) ➤ He expelled them after all private school admissions deadlines closed, leaving them no options. (p.11) ➤ He never asked their teachers about the decision. He never let them say goodbye. (p.10) Now she sits alone in her bedroom doing online school, wondering why everyone hates her for being Jewish.
