story is becoming more important than he himself probably realizes. This comes from the fact that he puts at the center of the debate something that no one else had: simple human decency.
His song is not, contrary to commentators, a pro-Israel song. In fact, the word “Israel” does not appear at all in the song: it is the Jews that George stands for. This is the reaction of a man who sees a group of innocent people being unjustly scapegoated, and who decides that he will not let this pass.
This is incredibly brave. Here is a man who became world famous at nineteen years old, had a life of creativity and great fun, is reasonably wealthy - and yet, is ready to risk it all as old age starts to creep in. And I mean all: he has the supreme elegance of not mentioning it, but we all know that he has made himself a target.
And why? To be loyal to his friends.
Others who have the same opinions, like Paul McCartney or Ringo Starr, could have done it. They did not, and no one will blame them. But Boy George did, and that immediately sets him apart as a high quality human.
It also has a contagious effect. For the first time since October 7, simple voices of human decency are rising from everywhere, overwhelming by their numbers the hate troll factories of the antisemites. The huge, silent mass of decent people - most of them Gentiles - has found a voice, because a single man had the guts to stand up.
The children of Jacob salute you, sir. You are a man with convictions, and you will never be forgotten.
