Italy Cracks Down: Nationwide Burqa and Niqab Ban Proposed
Let's hope the bill passes in time to save Italy.
Some regions like Lombardy already ban these face coverings in certain public buildings as seen in this video.
NEWS: Italy is advancing a nationwide bill introduced in October 2025 by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s ruling Brothers of Italy party to ban the burqa and niqab in all public spaces.
This includes government offices, schools, universities, shops, commercial areas, and any other public buildings or places.
Violators would face fines from €300 to €3,000.
The bill addresses what the government calls cultural separatism linked to Islam, where Muslim communities form isolated groups that enforce their own rules, put pressure on women, promote practices like forced marriages, and reject or undermine Italian national laws.
Key additional measures include:
•Stricter rules on foreign funding for mosques and unrecognized religious groups (Islam lacks a formal state agreement in Italy unlike other major faiths).
•Stronger penalties for forced marriages, religious coercion, and related issues.
•Requirements for transparency to prevent foreign influence and parallel societies that ignore constitutional values.
Party figures such as Sara Kelany (immigration head) and Andrea Delmastro have stated it protects women’s rights, ensures religious freedom is practiced openly in line with Italy’s constitution, and stops practices that clash with national laws.
This proposal makes the restriction national.
With the conservative coalition’s strong majority, the bill is expected to move forward in parliament, though as of today (February 2026) it remains in the legislative process.
