Omer Shem Tov is an Israeli (former) hostage who survived 505 days in Hamas captivity.
Following his release in February 2025, he became a prominent global advocate to raise awareness for the remaining hostages.
At the age of 21, he was abducted from the Nova music festival on October 7, 2023.
After attempting to escape in a vehicle with friends, the car was ambushed by gunmen. He was bound and taken into the Gaza Strip.
Shem Tov spent the majority of his captivity in total darkness, in narrow tunnels 120 to 130 feet underground.
He endured severe starvation, initially surviving on small pieces of bread and water, and later on single biscuits and salty water. He lost 37 pounds (17 kilograms) in captivity.
During his captivity, Shem Tov refused a directive from his captors to help collapse a booby-trapped building onto Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops. He told his terrorist captors to shoot him in the head instead.
