Cain Clark, one of the attackers of the San Diego Islamic Center, was mandated to take an Ethnic Studies class focused on whiteness and white privilege. According to his mother, he asked to be excused because he felt the class made him feel “less than” due to his mixed racial background and Indonesian father. His request was denied.
